Having not completely learned the lesson from last time around, I didn’t book a rest day in this second half of the walk, however, I knew that day 13 would be leisurely so that’s close enough. After the bogs and marshes of the previous day, I was delighted to see the sun shining brightly for the next part of the journey. I gave myself an extra treat of a full English breakfast at Greenhead Tea Room before leaving the village.

Soon after leaving Greenhead towards Hadrian’s Wall I passed the remains of Thirlwall Castle before starting the climb onto the wall above Walltown Crags. As you can imagine there were a few tourists around, which made me feel pretty silly to be carrying a huge backpack, but I managed to avoid the crowds and keep moving.

There’s very little to say about this day other than ‘follow the wall’ until you’re ready to stop. The weather made this a really lovely 3.5 hour walk with great views and plenty of options to stop for lunch.

I stayed at The Sill YHA in Once Brewed which is very clean and new. There’s also a great pub just a few minutes down the road if you don’t want to use the communal kitchen.
Happy walking!
